Riverdale is a nice little town, with an actual downtown and a rich history. According to Wikipedia,
Riverdale was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 12, 1923, from portions of Pequannock Township, subject to the results of a referendum passed on April 17, 1923.
Mead Stapler – a man about whom a lengthy post would be insufficient – wrote “A Brief History of Riverdale” for the town’s Commemorative Book in 1973. A brief excerpt:
Pompton, or Riverdale, has always been a very important road junction. Even in 1806 and 1807, it was the junction of the roads to Morristown, Charlotteburg, Ringwood, and Hackensack. And even before that, it was the junction of the various Indian trails, which always followed the rivers. And the rivers draining the Ramapo and Wynockie Valleys, together with the Pequannock, all junction here. This meant that Pompton was a center of commerce during days of peace and military activity during war.
The company I worked for moved to 10 Mead Avenue in the mid-1980s. I liked the town and still do, and am always on the lookout for interesting history or stories about it.
